Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has permeated higher education at an unbelievably rapid rate, and faculty are understandably concerned about the impact it has on academic integrity. In attempt to address this concern, many companies have released “AI detection tools”.
In the Centre for Teaching and Learning, we do not support the use of generative AI detection tools. Generative AI detection tools are problematic for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:
- high false positive rates - they often flag authentic, genuine work as AI-generated (Giray, 2024)
- often “label non-native English speakers as AI-written” (Coley, 2023; Myers, 2023)
- newer evidence suggests work written by those with some types of neurodivergence, e.g. autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc., are prone to receiving false positives (Pindell, 2025)
With that in mind, we encourage faculty to review the Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence Tip Sheet for Faculty. This tip sheet explores the use and impact of AI in higher education while offering tips on mitigating and leveraging generative AI in your classroom. You are also invited to refer to Georgian’s Guiding Principles for AI. The Guiding Principles reflect our current strategic and academic priorities and commitments related to artificial intelligence and can help navigate AI’s ethical, social, and cultural implications and opportunities.
