Introduction
H5P is an ed tech tool that allows faculty to select from 50+ different content types and activities to boost engagement and interaction in their courses. You can create interactive videos, presentations, books, crosswords, quizzing games, and much, much more. H5P integrates right into Blackboard Ultra and you can even sync activities to the gradebook. We can't cover all of the possibilities in one article, but click the topics below to learn how to use H5P in Blackboard Ultra and navigate the H5P content builder.
Opening H5P in your Blackboard Ultra course
In your course where you want the H5P content to go, click on the + icon and choose Content Market.
Look for Interactive Content - H5P and click to launch the LTI.
Navigating to the H5P content builder
When the LTI launches, you'll first see the content manager. Once you have H5P content built, this is where you'll easily be able to find your content, organize it, and review/edit as needed. To open the H5P content builder, click the blue Add Content button.
Here is where you can browse through the 50+ content types available for you to use in your course. For many of the content types, there is a content demo available when you click on the Details button next to a content type. The content demo will launch in a new tab so that you don't lose your place.
When you have selected a content type to use, most will also have a link to an example and a tutorial near the top of the builder, which can be great references as you're learning how to use the tool.
The actual step by step instructions for using the content builder will vary depending on the content type selected, and outlining those steps is beyond the scope of this article. However, CTL regularly runs H5P workshops, and our Instructional Design Technologist team is also happy to help with H5P content creation as needed. Embedding H5P content in Blackboard Ultra
Please note that embedded H5P content cannot be synced to the gradebook.
If you would like your H5P content to be embedded in your Blackboard Ultra shell, scroll to the bottom of the H5P content builder, and choose the Publish tab. Click on the Public option, and then copy the code generated when you click Embed code. Click Save.
In your Blackboard Ultra course, where you would like to embed the H5P content, click on the + icon and choose Create.
Choose Document from the right-hand menu pop-up.
Create a title for your H5P content. Choose Add HTML.
Paste the embed code into the editor and then click Save.
As long as you have made the content visible to students, they will now see the H5P content embedded directly in their course.
Syncing H5P to the gradebook
Please note that graded H5P activities should be low stakes only - some tech savvy students may be able to locate the source code of the activity and find the answers.
Some faculty like to use H5P content for low stakes formative assessment feedback for their students, and assign a grade to help encourage students to complete the activity. If you would like your H5P content to sync to the gradebook, scroll to the bottom of the H5P content builder, and choose the Publish tab. Click on the Protected option, and then click Save and Insert.
The H5P content will appear to students as a link, and when they click on it it will launch the H5P LTI.

A gradable item has been automatically added to the gradebook for this H5P content.
Adding collaborators
Many faculty share resources, especially with other faculty teaching the same course. If you have built H5P content, and want to share it with another faculty member to use (or collaborate on creating the content!), you can add them as a contributor. Scroll to the bottom of the H5P content builder, and choose the Collaborators tab. Start writing the name of the person you'd like to add, and it will auto-populate for you to select.
If someone has added you as a collaborator, you can find that H5P in the H5P content manager through the “Shared with me” menu item.
