Introduction Understanding these scenarios Assessment results visibility settings prevent student access. Grades aren't yet posted Release conditions hide the assessment from view

Introduction

For many students, being able to see their grades and the feedback provided by instructors is an important part of their learning journey. There are occasions, however, when they are unable to view the marks or comments you make. The three main reasons this may happen are:

  1. Assessment results visibility are incorrectly configured.
  2. Grades aren't posted.
  3. Release conditions are hiding the assessment.

Understanding these scenarios

Assessment results visibility settings prevent student access.

For assessments with questions, it’s important to make sure the Assessment results settings are correctly configured.  If you have questions as part of your assessment, consider what you want students to view and how soon you want them to access it.

Submission View
Defines when students should be able to view their submission.

  • After submission - immediately after submitting
  • After individual grade is posted - after their individual assessment is graded and posted.
  • After due date - after the assessment’s due date. (This works well if you are not accepting late submissions.)
  • After all grades are posted - after all students' grades have been posted. (This works well if submissions are received and/or marked at different times or when feedback to one student could influence later submissions.)
  • On specific date - on an independently defined date. (This works well if you have multiple sections writing the same assessment at different times.

Automated Question Feedback
Defines when students should see the prepopulated feedback you have set for each question.

  • After submission - immediately after submitting
  • After due date - after the assessment’s due date. (This works well if you are not accepting late submissions.)
  • After all grades are posted - after all students grades have been posted. (This works well if submissions are received and/or marked at different times or when feedback to one student could influence later submissions.)
  • On specific date - on an independently defined date. (This works well if you have multiple sections writing the same assessment at different times.

Question Scores
Defines when students should see the points earned on each individual question.

Correct Answers
Defines if students can see the correct answer for each question.

  • on or off - allows a student to see what the correct answer was for assessment questions. If enabled, students will also be able to view the ‘example of a correct answer’ for essays if you provided one.

Grades aren't yet posted

In the assessment settings menu, an option is listed called under Assessment grade, called Post assessment grades automatically. If this is unchecked, you will need to manually post the grades in you course either individually or as the whole class. Until grades are posted, students will not be able to see their grade or feedback.

Release conditions hide the assessment from view

Some faculty have developed a routine of setting show and hide dates for their assessments. While in Bb Original this only affected student access to the assessment itself, it has a greater impact in Ultra. Assignments that are hidden from view in the Content area, according to date, performance, or membership, are also unavailable in the Gradebook. In these cases, grades and feedback will not be accessible to the student to view.
